Alott of work

Today I put in almost 75 jobs which is huge! To be honest, I'm ready to go home. I'm looking at a way to format the printed off version. I want to make the information readable, on one page and hopefully not to many pages. Other than that, today was relativly un eventful.

Same old...

Today I worked on the Data base some, talked with Kathy about various things such as 360 evals, other similar evals, and their PI system. She gave me a notebook about a newer PI system and i read over it, it was interesting but I would be interested in seeing the math and validity studies behind it because its beyond me how they determine some of these things accurately and reliably. I check out their website and requested some materials on the various selection / evaluation services and products that they have. They instantly send you a 65 page .PDF on "hiring, retaining, and identifying top performers". I glanced over it and it had some pretty interesting things.

I arranged to have Dr. Schaffer come for a meeting with Kathy and I. I also have secured a ticket to go out on the estate and see it, which it has been a very long time since I have been there. I'm going to wait until it gets a little colder and the leave start to change.

First Meeting

Today I attended my first HR staff meeting. The meeting started out with some introductions of me and some new additions to the HR department. After that we had a brief OSHA training session. Then the manager of the group sales department came and did a short presentation on what they are doing to better the company, which was actually interesting. Finally Lynne Ivey did a short presentation on counseling, coaching and termination, which was also very interesting to see the BE's policies and other legal considerations.

Not too much going on...

Today I did a lot of work on the data base and got about 45 jobs entered. Scott rescheduled our meeting to discuss the PI system until October.

More than I can do?

So today was simply a normal day, I sat down at the computer and just added the jobs one after another until it was all a sudden 2pm. When I look at the data that I have to cover, I'm not sure if I will be able to process it all. There are a lot of jobs which need to be put into the database. I've also noticed that a lot of the job descriptions are either rather vague, too short, or formatted differently from one description from the next. This makes for harder for my to find certain things instantly. A uniform description layout and language would be much more beneficial. Next week I have arrange for a meeting with Scott to discuss the PI system. This topic is what we are currently covering in my HRM class.

Finally getting underway

Today I was able to finish the designing of the data base and also finished the testing and linkage of the various components which it will get, edit, and publish the data from. I have started on inserting data entries and learning some of the vocabulary/venacular of the B.E.'s HR department and organizational charts.

Reference Searching

I sat down with Dr. Lambert today after class to discuss different aspects of job descriptions and job analysis. She was able to provide me with lots of examples and some more resources. I soon will read through all the information I have amassed and begin writing soon.

First real day

Today was my first real office day, I was shown around, given an ID badge, introduced to pretty much everyone in the HR department and the Executive suite. I then started on my project which is putting together the data base for the different jobs, grades, etc. I have had to teach myself Microsoft Access, which hasn't been too hard, but there are a few things which I am still working on and trying to figure out.

Training...

Today I went through the biltmore's employee training, which every employee goes through and then continues their training in their specific area. The training is dubbed B.E.S.T. (Biltmore Estate Staff Training) and is a two day course which goes over the history of the Biltmore Estate and also your benefits, rules and regulations, etcetera.
